The Reviews

Review by: Ian Clark
Personal Rating: 9/10

Now don't ask me why, but the Vostro line is far cheaper than Dell's Inspiron's. This made me slightly cautious as to what the quality would be like, and how it would run, but below is my review after having had this notebook for just over a month.

The System
The specifications I got on my notebook were top of the range for it's time. This brought it to around £700 when what I would be looking at for an equivalent laptop from somewhere else would be up to £1,200. I was immensely surprised at this and bought it as soon as I could. A litle tip if you ever buy a laptop off dell for the first time. You want to ensure that you buy a "Truebright" or equivalent screen, the best battery, and most importantly get rid of the non-compulsory items. Having said this I bought a powerful machine with all of these on. It runs really really smoothly, and have not had any problems playing games at all. The only problem brings me onto my next point, which is my only worry, the operating system.

Windows Vista
This operating system is truly awful! It simply doesn't work. The image viewer will even crash. If you need to get a laptop of any kind at the moment and it comes with Vista, be sure to keep your XP disk at handy with you. The flashy GUI (Graphical User Interface) is nice for the first couple of hours and then it gets a bit boring and you see that it's all a waste of time!

Dell
To be honest I haven't had much of a problem with Dell at all. They will give you replacements on items if you request them, but it might be a slightly arduous task. When however, you consider that you are getting a well built machine for far far less, it's really quite good.

A pretty nice, all round machine. Works really nicely except for the dodgey operating system, but we can't blame Dell for that one. Ensure that when you buy a laptop you spec it up using the criteria I stated about and you'll be laughing!

Protection or Precaution?
Norton, McAfee, AVG, Bitfinder. All these companies promise to protect your PC from any virus or hacker that may want to harm your computer. But do any of them actually work? Or is it just fleecing you of yet more money for nothing!?
