The Reviews

Review by: Ian Clark
Personal Rating: 6/10

Now, it's extremely easy for people to express a strong like or indeed dislike for a product. Trying to reach a balanced review is that much harder. With vista however, in my opinion, many many users will simply struggle to meet that "midway" point.

I recently bought a new Dell Laptop. Microsoft have been working with Dell for some years, and the release of Vista immediately saw a production in Vista-run Dell laptop and desktops. Had it not been for this reason, I can only imagine that I would have opted for an XP machine, as I felt comfortable working with it, and despite know it had faults, being a user of XP for many years, I felt that I knew the ins and outs, and it certainly felt like a homely kind of operating system.

As I'm sure you're all aware, there has been a huge uproar over the release of Vista, and many many passionate views expressed over it, both negative and positive. But for what reason is there such contrasting feelings over Vista? How could it be that, what to some is "amazing" and "fantastic" is "awful" and "rubbish" for other users?

I really think that the secret behind this is the whole production of Vista and it's functionality. Microsoft announced Vista, showing off some of it's advanced functions and aesthetically pleasing movement - such as the application switcher. What Microsoft did also do however, is make a lot of promises, that never really got further than the drawing board.

Microsoft seemed to almost mold Vista together from other components and ideas which they could see elsewhere.

My view on vista however is this. I simply cannot justify the extras on Vista over the stability of XP. Dell decided to 'enhance' my version of Vista by adding their own tools to it. This may be the reason that my Control panel doesn't work, and it's got to the point that I cannot even begin a support session, as windows doesn't even know it's own product ID. A series of immense errors.

When I use vista, I strongly feel that I'm not in control. Vista controls all, and you're just along for the ride. Having said that, on a low level, Vista works rather nicely, without too much error, but the sheer fact that my Control Panel simply doesn't work is simply too much to ignore.

I may be the first Vista user who's control panel doesn't work, that I do not know, but I know this. Many have complained about Vista for it's lack of - well technology, advancement from XP, and in general for it's poor performance.

Microsoft has really be the sole reason behind the new 1GB RAM machines. Vista is really the first operating system that is so memory hungry, even 2GB ram is too little. It's all just gone wrong.

If you have the choice, in my opinion, stick with XP, or apple, or indeed get any of the flavors of Linux. The visual effects, and the new snazzy designs will look good on first inspection, but after a month or two of using it, only then will you truly realize what myself and other people mean when we say "avoid this operating system".
