The Reviews

Even as a safe driver, Its just so easy to let your car's speed creep up and not notice that speed camera. I was looking for a device which recognised all types of speed camera, but the new Road Traffic Act makes detectors of mobile speed traps illegal. However, GPS based systems are regarded as 'safety devices' and so are allowed. Many satnavs include speed camera identification along your route. What the microgo does is to give verbal warnings and distances to permanent or long-term cameras. RoadPilot rely on users logging temporary sites like roadworks and average speed cameras.

The system should be a doddle to setup, but in my case, the software loaded the wrong driver and I had to phone customer services. They were quick and effcient in sending details to correct this fault, but the speed of their e-mail did indicate it is also a common failing. You can adjust the background light to match the colours of your car dials by using the settings feature.

Once set up, you plug the compact device into the cigarette lighter socket, fit the suction mount to the windscreen and off you go. The only problem is that it has no internal battery so needs to be plugged in all the time, which is diffiicult if you have a satnav as well. In addition, the unit is not without its flaws. For instance, it told me there was an average speed trap just outside my house in a housing estate - which was definitely untrue! Also information sent by users by pressing the single control button is often out of date as roadworks move their location.

The set normally comes with a 6 months subscription to the camera database, but I bought it from Halfords who had an additional 6 months as an offer. I think this is a useful gadget, but at nearly £100 (and a later subscrioption charge), it would have to save you a couple of speeding offences to pay for it. It is a safety feature though and it allows you to see your speed accurately, which I soon realised was rather different to my speedo. I think that this device's functions will soon be incorporated into regular satnavs. Nonetheless it is neat, simple, relatively cheap, easy to use and portable. Would I recommend it? Probably not.
