The Reviews

Review by: Liam Spencer
Personal Rating: 9/10
Date of Review: 05/01/2008

I ordered this phone (although admittedly mine was black but that's irrelevant) in July 2006. Having read many reviews before purchasing - some very good, some rather less flattering - I decided to go for it, despite my worries about the dodgy joystick. At first I absolutely loved it, I had no problems at all and wondered what on earth people were moaning about. But then it became clear. I have three main problems with mine, the first two being liveable with - when I view pictures I have taken with the camera (which is good for a mobile phone) and want to zoom in on them, the screen and entire phone freezes. I have to remove and then re-insert my memory stick to remedy this - annoying but I can live with that. The other minor problem is the volume/zoom buttons themselves - the "up" (volume louder/zoom in) button works fine but the "down" button hardly works at all - it will hardly move when I press it, and I have to excert a LOT of force to get it to do anything, thus almost squeezing the phone to breaking point and bruising my fingers in the process. But I can just about live with that too.
I don't use the music player all that much and don't bother zooming in or out of photos anymore anyway, given the first problem.

The main snagging point, however, IS the joystick. When it worked, it was easy to use. But now mine has started going wrong - it moves in a different direction to that which I want it to, it selects options when I am trying to scroll through (resulting in messages being sent to the wrong recipients etc. and a lot more wrong actions being taken by mistake) and sometimes it just doesn't even bother to work at all. It is also very prone to dust, dirt and hair etc. getting in underneath the joystick pad, and I'm certain this is part of the problem. I have tried living with it for the 3 months it has been playing up but am getting increasingly frustrated with it. But there's not much I personally can do - I bought it SIM Free from Amazon, whilst in the middle of a PAYG contract with O2 and so can't get it insured with them (one of their rules), I can't very well sell it and buy a new phone. So I have wasted £250 (price at time of purchase) on an utter waste of space. Apart from the major flaws, it is a very good phone and provided me with countless hours of fun while it was still working, but now disappointingly, I can hardly use it at all....well, that is without feeling the need to throw it on the ground and stamp on it until it starts working again!
